Vancouver Island University, one of 11 universities in the province of B.C. has students from around the world who are engaged in innovative projects and partnerships which the university believes create a unique experience for the student from abroad.
Along with its strong focus on rigorous academics in a small, university environment, VIU believes that being connected, active and engaged with the local environment is healthy and helps students who are new to Canada or the community to adjust.
To do this, VIU prepares exciting schedules for students to participate in activities that explore the Island’s vibrant communities, local cultural events and attractions outside of their academic studies.
They have also created a unique program called “JOIN ONE” which supports the concept that “students participating in at least ONE extracurricular activity, enjoy a more fulfilling university experience.”
With three key focus areas, students can see where they will be happiest and gain support for their ultimate success.
U Live – which is about “keeping yourself feeling great” – where students can investigate opportunities for involvement in on-campus recreation, student health and wellness and other activities.
U Lead – where students can get involved and lead others by joining programs such as a peer success coaching program, student ambassadors or other themed clubs.
U Learn – believing that “knowledge is key”, VIU encourages students to look at jobs on campus or local cultural activities such as The Woodbridger Film series, where weekly presentations of cutting-edge films that explore a variety of themes including globalization, human rights, war and peace, capitalism, music, culture, health, gender, sexuality, and much more – all presented on campus.
